Over the course of 2025, we had the pleasure of finding out more about a whole range of AI topics from researchers around the world. Here, we highlight some of our favourite interviews from the past 12 months.

Please note: we have not included our interviews with AAAI/ACM SIGAI Doctoral Consortium participants – these are highlighted in this dedicated collection. Interviews appear in order of publication.

Interview with Erica Kimei: Using ML for studying greenhouse gas emissions from livestock

We caught up with Erica Kimei to find out about her research studying gas emissions from agriculture, specifically ruminant livestock. Erica combines machine learning and remote sensing technology to monitor and forecast such emissions.

Interview with Yuki Mitsufuji: Improving AI image generation

We spoke to Yuki Mitsufuji, Lead Research Scientist at Sony AI, to find out more about two pieces of research that his team presented at the Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS 2024). These works tackle different aspects of image generation – single-shot novel view synthesis, and high-speed generation, introducing the models GenWarp and PaGoDA respectively.

Interview with Nisarg Shah: Understanding fairness in AI and machine learning

AIhub ambassador Kumar Kshitij Patel caught up with Nisarg Shah at the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI). In an insightful interview, they discussed Nisarg’s research, the role of theory in machine learning research, fairness and safety guarantees, regulation, conference reviews, and advice for those just starting out on their research journey.

Interview with AAAI Fellow Sriraam Natarajan: Human-allied AI

We met with Sriraam Natarajan to talk about his research on human-allied AI. Sriraam told us about his career path, just a few of the many research projects he’s been involved in, reflections on changes to the AI landscape, and his passion for cricket.

Interview with AAAI Fellow Roberto Navigli: multilingual natural language processing

We chatted to Roberto Navigli, whose area of interest is natural language processing. As well as his position as a Professor at Sapienza University of Rome, Roberto also runs Babelscape, a multilingual NLP spin-off company. We found out more about Roberto’s research and how he balances these two roles.

Interview with Eden Hartman: Investigating social choice problems

In their paper Reducing Leximin Fairness to Utilitarian Optimization, Eden Hartman, Yonatan Aumann, Avinatan Hassidim and Erel Segal-Halevi present a scheme for addressing social choice problems. In this interview, Eden tells us more about such problems, the team’s methodology, and why this is such a fascinating and challenging area for study.

Interview with Gillian Hadfield: Normative infrastructure for AI alignment

Gillian Hadfield is an economist and legal scholar turned AI researcher, and was one of the invited speakers at the 33rd International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI). AIhub ambassador Kumar Kshitij Patel caught up with her at the conference to find out more about her interdisciplinary research, career trajectory, path into AI alignment, law, and general thoughts on AI systems. You can listen to, and read, the interview here.

Preparing for kick-off at RoboCup2025: an interview with General Chair Marco Simões

We spoke to Marco Simões, one of the General Chairs of RoboCup 2025 and President of RoboCup Brazil, to find out what plans they have for the event, some new initiatives, and how RoboCup has grown in Brazil over the past ten years.

Gearing up for RoboCupJunior: Interview with Ana Patrícia Magalhães

An important element of the RoboCup World Cup is RoboCupJunior, designed to introduce school children to the main competition. Ahead of the event, we spoke to Ana Patrícia Magalhães to find out more about the plans for 2025, and how RoboCup has inspired people of all ages.

RoboCupRescue: an interview with Adam Jacoff

The RoboCupRescue League is an important element of the RoboCup competition and focuses on the challenges involved in search and rescue applications. We sat down with Adam Jacoff, co-founder of the RoboCupRescue league, former RoboCup Trustee, and chair of the organising committee, to find out more.

An interview with Nicolai Ommer: the RoboCupSoccer Small Size League

The Soccer component of RoboCup comprises a number of leagues, with one of these being the Small Size League (SSL). Ahead of the competition, we spoke to Executive Committee member Nicolai Ommer to find out more about the SSL, how the auto referees work, and how teams use AI.

Introducing the NASA Onboard Artificial Intelligence Research (OnAIR) platform: an interview with Evana Gizzi

We spoke to Evana Gizzi, Artificial Intelligence Research Lead at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, about the NASA Onboard Artificial Intelligence Research (OnAIR) platform. This open-source software pipeline and cognitive architecture tool has been designed to aid space research and missions. Evana told us about some of the particular challenges of deploying AI-based solutions in space, and how the tool has been used so far. This work was presented at IAAI 2025, which was co-located with AAAI 2025.

The value of prediction in identifying the worst-off: Interview with Unai Fischer Abaigar

At this year’s International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML2025), Unai Fischer-Abaigar, Christoph Kern and Juan Carlos Perdomo won an outstanding paper award for their work We hear from Unai about the main contributions of the paper, why prediction systems are an interesting area for study, and further work they are planning in this space.

Interview with Luc De Raedt: talking probabilistic logic, neurosymbolic AI, and explainability

Should AI continue to be driven by a single paradigm, or does real progress lie in combining the strengths of many? Luc De Raedt has spent much of his career addressing this question. Through pioneering work that bridges logic, probability, and machine learning, he has helped shape the field of neurosymbolic AI. AIhub ambassador Liliane-Caroline Demers sat down with Luc at IJCAI 2025 to find out more.
