Congratulations to the #AAAI2023 award winners

A number of prestigious awards were announced shortly before the start of AAAI 2023, and will be officially presented during the conference. Some of the winners will also be giving invited talks as part of the programme.

2023 AAAI Award for Artificial Intelligence for the Benefit of Humanity

The AAAI Award for Artificial Intelligence for the Benefit of Humanity recognises the positive impacts of artificial intelligence to protect, enhance, and improve human life in meaningful ways with long-lived effects.

The winner of this year’s award is Tuomas Sandholm (Carnegie Mellon University). Tuomas has been recognised for “outstanding scientific and software contributions to the design and implementation of organ exchanges, and their direct impact on both practice and policy”.

2023 AAAI Feigenbaum Prize

The AAAI Feigenbaum Prize is awarded biennially to recognize and encourage outstanding Artificial Intelligence research advances that are made by using experimental methods of computer science.

The 2023 recipient of the award is Milind Tambe (Harvard University and Google Research), for “high-impact contributions to the field of artificial intelligence through innovation and achievement in socially beneficial applications of AI in security, healthcare, and conservation”.

2023 Robert S. Engelmore Memorial Award

The Robert S. Engelmore Memorial Award recognises outstanding contributions to automated planning, machine learning and robotics, their application to real-world problems and extensive service to the AI community.

This year’s award goes to Manuela Veloso (JP Morgan Chase) for “outstanding contributions to automated planning, machine learning and robotics, their application to real-world problems and extensive service to the AI community”.

2023 AAAI/EAAI Patrick Henry Winston Outstanding Educator Award

The annual AAAI/EAAI Outstanding Educator award was created to honour a person (or group of people) who has made major contributions to AI education that provide long-lasting benefits to the AI community and society as a whole.

The 2023 winner is Ayanna Howard (The Ohio State University) for “increasing accessibility to computing resources for children with special needs, promoting the use of social robots to engage children in education, and working with students at all levels to increase diversity and access in computing, engineering, and AI”.

2023 AAAI Distinguished Service Award

The AAAI Distinguished Service award recognizes one individual each year for extraordinary service to the AI community.

The winner this year is Ramasamy Uthurusamy, for “significant contributions to the field of AI through sustained service as a conference founder and organizer, as an industrial leader, and as a scientific society leader”.
