As part of our ongoing focus on the UN sustainable development goals (SDGs), we are launching the next topic in this series: life below water. Posts on this topic will be featured on our website throughout April.

AIhub focus issue on life below water

Life below water

The aim of this UN SDG is to: “Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.” This includes topics such as reducing marine pollution, protecting and restoring ecosystems, reducing ocean acidification, and sustainable fishing.

In our issue, among other things, we’ll be reporting on research which uses convolutional neural networks to identify floating marine litter from aerial images. We’ll also be bringing you updates from the progress of the Mayflower autonomous ship that is due to launch on 19 April.

You will be able to find all the articles related to this issue as we publish them at this link.

About the UN Sustainable Development Goals

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a collection of 17 interlinked goals designed to be a “blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all”. The SDGs were set in 2015 by the United Nations General Assembly and are intended to be achieved by the year 2030.

Would you like to contribute?

There is still time to contribute to this focus series. Just send us an email and we’d be happy to help you shape a blog post or set up an interview. Also, watch this space as we are soon to announce the next SDG we plan to cover, with content for that being published from May onwards.
