Yulu Pi



Yulu Pi is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Duisburg-Essen, working in the Compliant and Accountable Systems research group. She completed her PhD at the University of Warwick (2021–2025), investigating explainability, contestability, and empowerment in automated decision-making systems. Previously, she held a Turing Enrichment Fellowship at the Alan Turing Institute (2024–2025), examining human-centric approaches to AI development and governance. Before her doctoral research, she worked with UN agencies in both the Global North and South, including the World Meteorological Organization and UNICEF. Her research examines how algorithmic systems reshape the conditions under which people can contest decisions, exercise judgment, and hold systems to account. Her work draws on human-computer interaction, science and technology studies, and policy analysis.
