François Pachet on music generation with AI

In the latest in our series of IJCAI interviews, AIhub ambassador Liliane-Caroline Demers spoke to François Pachet to find out more about his work on music generation with AI. He talked about what deep learning has changed, why the next step for music generation requires combining sampling with search, and why the most important problems in artistic domains are, by nature, ill-defined.

RoboCup 2026 in action

This year, RoboCup was held in Incheon, South Korea, from 2-6 July. The event saw teams take part in competitions, training sessions, and a symposium. It’s an exciting time for RoboCup, as there have been some updates to the leagues and competition format. Most prominently, the soccer leagues are now primarily focussed on humanoid robots. You can find out what the participants got up to in our social media round-up.

International Conference on Machine Learning

Another major conference to take place this month was the International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML), which this year was held in Seoul, South Korea. The winners of the 2026 outstanding paper, outstanding position paper, and test-of-time awards were announced during the event. Find out who was successful here. We took a virtual stroll around the social media platforms to get a flavour of the conference happenings. How can we characterize consensus in a network of agents?

Belief Flow Networks give a logic-based way to ask not only whether connected agents will eventually agree on a shared “belief”, but which final shared beliefs can emerge. In this blog post, Nicolas Schwind writes about work exploring these networks which was nominated for a best paper award at the 25th International Conference on Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems (AAMAS).

Interactive world simulator for robot policy training and evaluation

In their work Interactive World Simulator for Robot Policy Training and Evaluation, Yixuan Wang and colleagues built a learned, action-conditioned video prediction model that, given the current image and a sequence of robot actions, predicts the next frames purely in pixel space, with no physics engine inside. Yixuan summarises the work in this blog post.

Congratulations to the 2026 EurAI distinguished service award winners

The EurAI Distinguished Service Award is presented annually to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the European AI community. The award recognises their excellent service and dedication towards advancing the field of AI. This year, the award goes to two researchers: Jérôme Lang and Luc de Raedt.

AAAI presidential panel discussions

The Future of AI Research report aims to clearly identify the trajectory of AI research in a structured way and covers 17 different AI topics. Members of the report team, and other selected AI practitioners, are taking part in a series of video panel discussions covering selected chapters from the report. The latest two in the series covered factuality and trustworthiness and AI and scientific integrity.

arXiv now an independent nonprofit

On July 1, 2026, arXiv spun out from Cornell University, its home for the past 25 years, to become an independent nonprofit organization. With the repository now hosting over three million articles, this change will allow arXiv to better deal with further predicted growth in submissions. You can find out more here.
